De nervus hypoglossus is een zuiver somatomotorische zenuw voor de spieren van de tong. De zenuw innerveert de intrinsieke tongspieren (m. longitudinalis superior, m. longitudinalis inferior, m. verticalis, m. transversus) en de extrinsieke tongspieren (m. genioglossus, m. hyoglossus en m. styloglossus).
